Home Partners Living Streets

For over 90 years Living Streets has been a beacon for walking.

In the early days our campaigning led to the UK’s first zebra crossing and the introduction of speed limits. To create streets that are fitter for walking we need change at a local and national level. From supporting nationwide campaigns, to creating change in your own neighbourhood, there are a number of ways you can get involved.

WOW – the year-round walk to school challenge

A generation ago, 70% of us walked to school – now it’s just over half. We want to reverse this decline. We want children to be energised and empowered, and to make walking to school their natural choice. This year-round challenge for primary schools is run by Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking. We are working in partnership with Bristol City Council to reduce congestion at school gates, increase active travel to school and improve the air quality all over Bristol.

Over 8,000 Bristol primary children are taking part in the UK’s leading behaviour change programme WOW – the year-round walk to school challenge, contributing to the 600,000 throughout the UK.

Children who walk to school at least once a week are rewarded with a monthly badge based on an annual theme. The badges, made from recycled yoghurt pot materials, are designed by children in Living Streets’ annual badge design competition.

If your school is taking part – you are doing a great thing! Remember to share on social media to inspire others @livingstreets, #walktoschool, @briswalkfest21.

If your school is not taking part, contact Laura.service@livingstreets.org.uk to get signed up for the next academic year.

If you don’t want to wait until September – you can get involved in a themed five day walk to school challenge to get warmed up. Packs per class cost £11. #WalkToSchoolWeek.

Taking part in WOW contributes to a schools’ accreditation of Modeshift STARS, a Department for Transport backed scheme that recognises schools and other educational establishments that have shown excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable and active travel. To register for Modeshift STARS, contact Cathy Mayne at Bristol City Council Sustainable Transport Team.
