Tony Wright presents the Breeze Breakfast show from 6am – 10am on weekday mornings. When he’s not brightening our airwaves with his dulcet tones, he can often be found walking around his home city of Bristol.
Tell us a bit about your preferred local walking route and why you love it so much.
My favourite walk has to be along Severn Beach front. It’s amazing to see the Severn Bridge up close and take in the fresh air whilst watching my dogs enjoy life.
How long have you been walking there and when did you first discover it?
I am a born and bred Bristolian, so I can remember my mum and dad taking me there when there was a swimming pool complex nearby – although it’s gone now. It’s been part of my life since the late 1970’s.
Who normally accompanies you on your walks?
I usually go with my wife, two daughters and three poodles. We have two standard poodles (Bonnie, who is seven and Gracie, who is four months old) and a miniature poodle called Pippa who thinks she’s a Rottweiler! If you’re wondering why I have poodles, it’s because they don’t malt so it doesn’t affect various allergies in our house. They are also ultra intelligent, and so loving.
How do you feel when you’re out for a walk? Does it change your state of mind?
I find it helps de-stress if you’ve had one of those days. Just to breathe in the fresh air, and watch the dogs have so much fun is just lovely. It really clears the mind.
Have you experienced any health benefits from walking?
Without doubt! It gives me a spring in my step and has helped with a bit of weight loss.
Do you have any particular kit you take with you when you’re walking? If so, what do you take and why?
I always wear walking shoes, as it can be a little slippery sometimes. I always take a bottle of water too, especially in the summer.
What tips would you give to anyone thinking about getting into walking?
If you are just starting out, do five minutes one week and build up to longer walks, especially if you’re unfit. You’ve got to start somewhere. It’s a great way to get fit and, best of all, it’s free!
