Go for a hike and help connect Bristol to the rest of Great Britain
Slow Ways is an initiative to create a network of recommended routes that people can use to walk between all of Great Britain’s towns, cities and national parks.
As part of Bristol Walk Fest 2022, Slow Ways is calling on walkers from across the city to make Bristol the first major city to have a complete set of Slow Ways walking routes. Could Bristol be the best Slow Ways city by the end of the festival? We think so!
During the first lockdown, volunteers created the network by plotting and sharing thousands of routes. The challenge now is to walk and check all routes to make sure they are good enough to be in the network.
On your own or in a group, could you help by walking one or three?
Walk 5-20km
Bristol currently has a web of suggested Slow Ways routes that connect the centre of the city to Filton, Hambrook, Keynsham, Wick, Nailsea, Portishead and Winford (see above image). All of those places are connected to each other by routes that need checking too.
Walk 20+ km
If you want to be more adventurous, it would be fantastic to see which other towns or cities we could connect Slow Ways to during the festival. Could you walk and check routes to Yate, Wells, Stonehouse, Monmouth or somewhere even further afield?
All Slow Ways routes need to be checked. To become a verified Slow Way and be awarded a Slow Ways snail, routes need to be reviewed by at least three people.
By the end of the Bristol Walking Festival at the end of May, could we collectively walk and review enough routes to give the city a full set of verified Slow Ways routes? Why not!
