WOW – the year-round walk to school challenge

Did you know?

May is National Walking Month!

55% is the government objective of children aged 5 to 10 walking to school by 2025.

22 May is Happy Shoesday. Sign up and get involved for free.

A generation ago, 70% of us walked to school – now it’s just over half.

We want to reverse this decline. We want children to be energised and empowered, and to make walking to school their natural choice.

This year-round challenge for primary schools is run by Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking. We are working in partnership with Bristol City Council to reduce congestion at school gates, increase active travel to school and improve the air quality all over Bristol.

Over 8,000 Bristol primary children are taking part in the UK’s leading behaviour change programme WOW – the year-round walk to school challenge, contributing to the 600,000 throughout the UK.

This campaign is having big impacts around the country:

  • 57% of Bristol pupils’ who are taking part in WOW are walking to school
  • 21% increased their walking rates in Bristol schools who started WOW in September 2017
  • 23% to12% is the drop in car usage in Bristol schools who started WOW in September 2017
  • 30% – fewer cars at the school gates.

Children who walk to school at least once a week are rewarded with a monthly badge based on an annual theme. The badges, made from recycled yoghurt pot lids, are designed by children in Living Streets’ annual badge design competition.

Daily journeys are logged by pupils on our interactive tool WOW Travel Tracker, providing valuable active travel data to schools and local authorities.

If your school is taking part – how about asking others to join you on the walk to school to make more of an event of it! Perhaps there are grandparents or other members of your family who would love to share the journey with you? Share the surroundings you spy and the paths you pursue with us on social media @livingstreets, #walktoschool, @briswalkfest18.

If your school is not taking part, contact Laura.Service@livingstreets.org.uk to get them signed up for the next academic year.

If you don’t want to wait until September – you can get involved in a themed five day week long walk to school challenge to get warmed up. Packs per class cost £10.

Taking part in WOW contributes to a schools’ accreditation of Modeshift STARS.
