In this blog post, we chatted to Patsy Hudson from Bristol Ramblers, one of the largest walking groups in the country, offers about 300 walks each year to suit all preferences. Many of these walks are on Sundays, but there are also Saturday and midweek walks. They also arrange trips to other parts of the country, and occasional social events.
How are you involved in Bristol Walk Fest this year?
This year I’ll be leading ‘Riverside to Sea Mills‘, a walk from the water tower on the Downs on 6th May and a second walk from Dundry on 22nd May 2025.
Both walks cover approximately 6 miles of undulating paths and countryside, with stunning views. We will have a coffee break halfway to fully appreciate these spectacular views and to quench our thirst.
Where is your favourite place to walk?
My favourite walks are mountain challenges and I have walked much of the coastal paths of England and Wales. I think these walks are special for their constantly-changing landscapes and seascapes.
How long have you been walking there and how did you discover it?
I have been walking in the mountains of the Lake District since I was a child which is many a long year ago!
Who do you like to walk with and why?
For many years I walked with my family. I also have walked with the Bristol Ramblers. Now I often choose to walk on my own or with one or two friends.
How do you feel when you’re out for a walk?
As I climb to the crest of a hill and stop to look around me, I can sense a feeling of wellbeing in my mind and body.
Have you experienced any health benefits from walking?
Challenging walks and runs have kept me well and fit for many years! Walking in mountains, hills and coastal paths have been some of the most memorable experiences of my life.
Podcast, music or peace and quiet when walking?
Peace and quiet and bird song please!!
What’s your favourite bit of kit?
My rucksack with water and food!
What do you like about Bristol Walk Fest?
Last year was the first time I led a walk as part of Bristol Walk Fest. I very much enjoyed the experience which is why I’m back again this year! I think it’s great to see people coming together to explore the amazing countryside around Bristol.
