Act Now, Age Better

Home Bristol Walkfest News Act Now, Age Better

Age UK are committed to transforming public attitudes to ageing and have just launched their Act Now, Age Better campaign. In this article, we’re finding out what it’s all about.

Act Now, Age Better aims to change attitudes to ageing by starting a national conversation about what it means to get older. The campaign kicks off by talking about staying active and encourages “mid lifers” (those aged 50-65) to get or keep moving – changing how they age by improving their health and wellbeing as they get older.

One in six deaths in the UK is linked to physical inactivity, so we know making movement a part of our daily lives is so important. It’s not always easy: finding time for fitness in busy schedules is a challenge – particularly for those in mid-life who may be balancing the demands of work, children and older parents.

But staying active now increases the chances of living the life we want later. It’s an investment in the future: a bit like paying into a physical pension plan. And through this campaign, Age UK want to share simple, effective ways to move more that can work for modern life.

“Every step, pedal stroke, paddle, dance move, and even bit of housework counts towards a healthier, stronger future”

Movement is our secret weapon to staying strong. Building fitness, strength and balance now can act as a buffer against ageing, helping us stay independent for longer. It can give us:

  • A sharper mind: regular movement can cut dementia risk.
  • A stronger heart: regular exercise lowers cardiovascular disease risk.
  • Better balance, with fewer falls: regular movement reduces fall risk.
  • A healthier metabolism: staying active reduces your risk of type 2 diabetes.

You don’t need a fancy gym membership, or even any equipment to get moving. Focusing on what’s known as ‘functional fitness’ means you can build strength, flexibility, balance and coordination, all by opting for full-body moves that help you do day-to-day activities.

Walking is a wonderful way to get started and with the huge variety of walks taking place his month during Bristol Walk Fest, you can find something that suits you. All walks are given a level of difficulty, starting with easy and progressing to hard. You can search through everything on offer here and use the keyword search box too to help you: for instance you could search for ‘accessible’, ‘toilets’ or ‘dog’. With the amount of walks on offer, we know you’ll find something that works for your level and interests.
